Happy Day Wall Hanging

You can have your cake...and create it too! Follow this recipe for fun and make your own tabletop decoration or wall hanging. Add your own unique lettering and serve up a sweet memory.

Fabric Requirements:

Cut (2) 3 1/2" x 18"
Fat 1/8Black with white polka-dots printCut into "Happy Day" letters*
2/3 ydWhite with black polka-dots printCut (2) 2 1/2" wide Strips for binding
Cut (1) 12 1/2" x 14 1/2" for the background
20" x 24"Batting
Fat 1/4Backing fabric
1 packageFusible adhesive
1 packageBlack rick-rack


  • Finished Size: 14" x 18"
  • All seam allowances are 1/4" unless noted.
  • Fat 1/8 = approximately 9" x 22"
  • Fat 1/4 = approximately 18" x 21"
  • * = Adhere fusible adhesive to back of fabric before die-cutting the shapes.

Piecing the Quilt:

  1. Place the Cake and Letters on the background, layering as desired.
  2. When satisfied with the placement, heat fuse in place with an iron. Stitch around the shapes as desired.
  3. Pin the rick-rack to the edge of the background fabric.
  4. Pin the 3 1/2" x 18" top and bottom borders to the background. Sew in place.
  5. Pin the 3 1/2" x 14 1/2" side borders to the background. Sew in place.


  1. Layer the backing, batting and quilt top. Quilt by hand or machine, as desired.
  2. Sew binding strips together to form one long strip. Fold wrong sides together, lengthwise, and press.
  3. With a 1/4" seam, sew the raw edges of the binding to the edges of the right side of the quilt. Turn the folded edge of the binding to the back side of the quilt and stitch in place by hand, mitering the corners.
