Fat 1/8 Pants, shorts or capris
(quilter's cotton)
Cut (4) pant leg pieces cut to desired length
1 package Elastic
1 package Buttons
1 package Thread (color of choice)

  • All seam allowances are 1/4" unless noted, and always lock in stitches at the beginning and the end to prevent unraveling.
  • Fat 1/8 = approximately 9" x 22"
  • Fat 1/4 = approximately 18" x 21"

Assembling the Jacket:

  1. Cut two bodice pieces on the fold. Cut one piece in half for the two front jacket pieces and leave one bodice piece whole for the jacket back.
  2. Fold the wrist edge of the sleeve and topstitch the hem (Fig. 1). Repeat for other sleeve.
  3. Fold the sleeve in half, right sides together, and sew the straight edge. Repeat for other sleeve and turn both sleeves right side out (Fig. 1).
  4. Place the two halves on top of the jacket back, right sides facing, edges lined up. Sew both of the top shoulders and both side edges (Fig. 2).
  5. Place one sleeve into the jacket arm hole. Pin the sleeve seam to the armpit seams and line up the fold on the top center of the sleeve to the jacket shoulder seam. Sew around the arm hole (Fig. 3). Repeat for the other sleeve.
  6. Turn the jacket right side out and place the collar along the edge of the neck opening. Place the collar right side down and the jacket right side up, overlapping just 1/8 - 1/4". Topstitch the two pieces together (Fig. 4).
  7. To add pockets, fold and stitch a single hem along the flat edge and topstitch. Pin each pocket in place and topstitch from one corner around the bottom to the other corner (Fig. 5).

Assembling the Pants, Shorts and Capris:

  1. Placing two pieces right sides together, sew the rise (inward curve) (Fig. 6). Repeat for the other two pieces.
  2. (TIP: If you want to sew on pockets, do so now).
  3. Place the front pieces and back pieces right sides together and sew the outer side seams (Fig. 7).
  4. Double roll the waist and hems on each pant leg and topstitch (Fig. 8).
  5. (TIP: To make shorts or capris, shorten the pant legs to desired length. To make bloomers, shorten to capri length and add elastic approximately 3/4" away from the bottom edge to gather the opening and add lace along the raw edge).
