Piecing the Quilt:

  1. Sew one red 1 1/2" Half-Square Triangle and one 1 1/2" Half-Square Triangle together to make a completed square (Diagram 1). Make 12 square units.
  2. Sew one red Half-Square Triangle to either side of one 1 1/2" H x 2 1/2" W Triangle to make a flying geese unit (Diagram 2). Make eight flying geese units.
  3. Sew two red 1 1/2" Squares together (Diagram 3). Make four rectangles.
  4. Arrange the units created in steps 1−3 to make the center star unit (Diagram 4). Sew across in rows first. Then sew the rows together.
  5. Arrange the 1 1/2" Squares and pieced squares from step 1 to make a flower unit (Diagram 5). Make four flower units.
  6. Arrange the flower units, white 2 1/2" Squares and center star unit (Diagram 6). Sew across in rows first. Then sew the rows together. This is the center unit.
  7. Sew a red 1 1/2" Square to a white 1 1/2" Square (Diagram 7). Make 32 rectangles.
  8. Sew eight red and white rectangles together to make a checkerboard pattern (Diagram 8). Make four rows.
  9. Sew a red 2 1/2" Square to each end of two checkerboard rows (Diagram 9).
  10. Sew the checkerboard rows to the center unit.
  11. Sew white triangles to the edges of the center unit (Diagram 10).
  12. Arrange the small red leaves on the white triangles, and stitch in place (Diagram 11).
  13. Sew red triangles to the edges (Diagram 12).
  14. Sew two red and two white 1 1/2" H x 2 1/2" W quarter-square triangles together to form a square unit (Diagram 13). Make 48 square units.
  15. Sew 12 square units together. Make four rows.
  16. Sew a red 2 1/2" Square to each end of two square unit rows (Diagram 9).
  17. Sew the square unit row to the quilt top.

Finishing:

  1. Layer the backing, batting and quilt top. Quilt by hand or machine as desired.
  2. Sew binding Strips together to form one long Strip. Fold wrong sides together lengthwise, and press.
  3. With a 1/4" seam, sew the raw edges of the binding to the edges of the right side of the quilt. Turn the folded edge of the binding to the back side of the quilt, and stitch in place by hand, mitering the corners.
