Butterfly Birthday Gift Box

Hi everyone, it's Audrey, sharing another fun gift wrapping idea with you. I don't know about you guys, but I love giving presents. Makes me feel great when I've really nailed the perfect gift, and I adore seeing my recipient's face when I hand them a beautifully wrapped package.  I tell you what....handmade gift wrap will feel twice as special as a store-bought gift bag, trust me. And most handmade gift wraps are really quite simple to make, too.

Sizzix Die Cutting Tutorial Birthday Gift Box by Audrey Pettit

Today I'm going to show you how to whip up this cute little card sleeve wrap.  So let's get started.

I love the look of brown paper packages, so I try to always keep a roll of kraft paper on hand. The neutral background works great for any theme, season, or holiday and can be masculine, feminine, or childlike, depending on your need. Simply wrap your package in brown kraft, and then add a band of patterned paper to set the mood.  By adhering several strips of patterned paper together end-to-end, you can cover even really large packages.

To create the card sleeve, trim a panel of patterned paper to 5.5" x 5". Using a scoring tool or bone folder, score the 5.5" side at 2.5" and 5".

Die cut a rounded notch from the top of the middle scored section using the oval tag die from the Thinlits Tags Die Set. To get perfect placement, turn the die face down against the paper and line it up exactly where you want to cut. Secure the die with a small piece of tape, flip the die and paper right side up, and run it through your die cutting machine as normal.

Turn your scored, die cut paper to the back side, and apply strong adhesive to the small side flap. Fold the two larger panels closed, and wrap the thin side panel around to the back to adhere. You can add adhesive across the bottom before folding, as well.  Or run the bottom through your sewing machine after adhering the side flap, as I did with mine.

Punch 1/2" holes in the bottom and top of the sleeve, thread ribbon through the holes, around to the back of the package and back up to the top. Tie ribbon into a bow on the bottom center of the sleeve.

Cut an insert of paper to fit the sleeve, and stamp a sentiment on the top corner. You can add a hand-written message to the insert, add a tucked note, or even slip in a gift card.

Now have fun adding embellishments to your package, like die cuts, buttons, and stickers. My package is summery, so I went with some flowers and a big bright butterfly stamped and die cut from the adorable Echo Park/Hampton Art For the Record 2 Tailored Stamp & Die-Cut Set.

Start by stamping your image onto the cardstock or paper of your choice.

And using the same placement process as I outlined above, die cut the matching shape.

Add color, lightly fold the wings up, adhere a small snippet of string to the back for antennae, and your butterfly is ready to be attached with a glue dot or pop dot.

Stamp and die cut two flowers from the same set. Adhere buttons to the centers and tuck flowers into the bow.

`That is a really nice way to wrap a gift. I love the idea to punch two holes in the envelope and to secure it with the ribbon that also forms the bow. Very artistic! I adore gift wrapping ideas as everyone needs to wrap something from time to time. Thanks Audrey for your lovely ideas!
