Sizzix Tutorial | Birdy Tag Card by Audrey Pettit

Hi everyone, it's Audrey, and today I have a fun Sizzix tutorial to share with you for creating a Birdy Tag Card. A tag-shaped mini card, to be precise, made with the versatile Tag Collection Sizzix Framelits by Tim Holtz and some adorable new dies and stamps from Doodlebug Design.

Shaped cards are a fun twist on the traditional card design, and are so quick and easy to make using your favorite Sizzix dies. Today I have made a sweet little tag-shaped mini card using one of the tag shapes from the Tag Collection Sizzix Framelits die set by Tim Holtz. I love it on it's own, but it's also adorable as a gift tag on my gift bag. There really are so many uses for it, and best thing is, once you see how easy it is to make, you can make your own shaped cards using any number of Sizzix dies in a variety of sizes and shapes to fit any occasion.

We'll begin by die cutting our card base shapes. I used the second to the largest tag shape from the Tag Collection set. Since the Tag Collection is a Framelits set, I recommend using the Sizzix Magnetic Platform in your Big Shot Machine with this standard die cutting sandwich for Framelits and Thinlits dies: Standard Magnetic Platform, Standard Cutting Pad (check out the new colored cutting pads!), paper, die (cutting side down), Standard Cutting Pad.

You will need two tags shapes to create one card. I die cut one tag from striped pattern paper, and the second from heavyweight cardstock.

Place the cardstock tag, or your bottom layer, onto a scoring board, and score across the top of the tag. Bend the top flap back and forth a couple of times to loosen up that top hinge.

Place some pieces of Score-Tape or strong adhesive onto the top hinge section of the bottom tag only. Die cut a decorative border from patterned paper using Stephanie Barnard's Borders Thinlits die set using the same Sizzix die cutting sandwich as above. Adhere the border across the bottom of the back tag so that part of the border extends off the bottom. Trim the sides. Adhere the patterned paper tag to the cardstock tag.

Die cut the hole reinforcer from the Tag Collection die set. You can see that I've got mine die cut here, and that the small paper circle is stuck in the die. Want a quick tip for getting those intricate die cuts out of their dies? Try rolling over the back of the metal die with the new Die Brush and Foam Pad.

Just a few rolls over the back of the die, and that paper pops right out! Now adhere the hole reinforcer to the top of the tag.

Stamp the sentiment from the A Little Birdy Told Me Framelits w/Stamps set onto the top of the tag using Potting Soil Archival Ink from Ranger.

Stamp the birds and nest image onto Ranger Watercolor Paper using the Potting Soil ink. Die cut the image using the matching Framelits die using the same Sizzix die cutting sandwich as mentioned above.

Watercolor the image using Distress Markers. Adhere image to the bottom of the tag using foam adhesive.

Cut a 12" length of Tim Holtz Crinkle Ribbon. Scribble Wild Honey Distress Marker onto a non-stick craft sheet. Dip the ribbon into water, and then swipe and drag it through the marker ink until completely coated. Set aside and allow the ribbon to dry completely.

Tie the dried ribbon around the bottom of the tag. Thread the top of the tag with baker's twine. Stamp an additional greeting onto a thin strip of watercolor cardstock, if desired, and add strip onto the inside of the tag.

I originally thought I wanted the sentiment popped up with foam adhesive, but changed my mind, and instead just adhered it directly to the inside of the tag card.

Hang your shaped card from a gift bag, tie it into a gift bow, or place it in an envelope for easy mailing!
Enjoy!
