Sizzix Tutorial | Birthday Layered Butterfly By Audrey Pettit

Hi everyone, it's Audrey! And today I have a fun Sizzix Tutorial to share with you for making this sweet mixed-media, vintage inspired card featuring the new Tim Holtz Layered Butterfly die and the super cool Dimensional Cutting Pad.

Tim's new Layered Butterfly, Dragonfly, and Bee dies are so much fun to work with, as they are big and beautiful, and have so much amazing detail thanks to the matching embossing folders that come with the sets. For my project, I pulled out my inks, paint, and glitter to create a unique and eye catching background and distressed butterfly, and set it all off with a 3-D card base created with the Dimensional Cutting Pad.

There are several steps and layers needed to create this pretty shabby-chic butterfly, but it's very easy and fun, and you're going to love what the Dimensional Cutting Pad will do with your favorite dies. I've got a full tutorial for you, so let's get started!

Begin by die cutting the Layered Butterfly from watercolor paper or heavy white card stock, replacing the top cutting pad with the Dimensional Cutting Pad. If you're not familiar with this process, use the following Sizzix cutting sandwich: regular cutting pad, then the die (face up), followed by paper, then topped with the dimensional cutting pad.

The Dimensional Cutting Pad has a raised groove down the center, which when placed over dies will cut only the outer edges and not where the groove is. So it is important to line the center groove of the cutting pad up with the center of the die image below. It's perfect for dies like this butterfly, as it leaves the center body attached to the paper but allows you to bend up the wings.

As you can see, the wings of the butterfly are die cut, but the center body is left intact.

Place the die cut paper inside the matching embossing folder, lining up the edges of the die cut with the edges of the butterfly shape on the folder. Sandwich the embossing folder between two standard cutting pads, then run the folder through your Big Shot machine using the Extended Multipurpose Platform opened to Tab 1.

Dab a bit of Weathered Wood Distress Stain onto a craft sheet, and mist the stain with water.

Drag and swipe the butterfly panel through the mixture, then dry with a heat tool, or allow to dry on its own completely. You can repeat this process as many times as you wish until you get the desired intensity of color. Just be sure to dry the paper between each step.

Dab Mustard Seed Distress Ink onto your craft sheet, then picking up the ink with a wet paintbrush, color the butterfly's body and the recessed areas of the wings. Allow to dry completely, or speed up the process with a heat tool.

Lightly swipe a paint dabber across the raised embossed areas of the wings. I used Ranger's Sandal dabber. Allow paint to dry, or dry with the heat tool. Lift the wings up, and edge with brown ink.

Slide a piece of scrap paper under the wings, then paint a thick coat of Distress Clear Rock Candy Crackle Paint over the wings. Sprinkle the wings liberally with glitter, then allow the crackle paint to dry. Once you start to see the tiny lines of crackle appear, you can finish the drying process with a heat tool.

I wanted the crackle lines to really show, so once my paint was completely dry, I went over the wings with brown ink and additional Weathered Wood Distress Stain, wiping off all excess ink and stain after allowing it to settle into the cracks.

Cut down the cardstock panel to fit the front of a square card base. Ink the edges, then layer onto a piece of patterned paper. I used pretty papers from Authentique's Harmony collection. Machine stitch around the edge of the paper.

To bring back more of the yellow gold color, swipe additional Mustard Seed Distress Ink directly over the butterfly. Then I applied a bit of Broken China Distress Paint to various spots and edges, smudging the paint with my finger in the center of the wings. Such a pretty finish, isn't it? So perfectly shabby!

Lift the wings and apply a bit of foam adhesive right at the base of each wing to give the wings an extra bit of lift.

Die cut patterned papers using the Tattered Curvy Banners Decorative Strip Die. Cut the banners into four random pieces. Stamp sentiment onto one of the strips. Ink edges with Distress Ink. Lightly bend and curve the banners around your fingers to give them a bit of dimension.

Adhere banners to the center of the butterfly body, along with Harmony ticket and label card stock stickers. Top label with a pretty glittered button.

I love how this turned out! The butterfly has such depth of color and detail with all those layers of ink and paint, and the glitter gives it such shine in real life. And seriously, how cool is that 3-D effect with the Dimensional Cutting Pad? Can't wait to try that with some of my other favorite Sizzix dies. I hope you're inspired to give it a try, too! Enjoy!
