Jewelry MIY: Floral Bib Necklace

Jewelry MIY: Floral Bib Necklace

A few years ago I learned how to make bib necklaces. Really, anything and everything goes when creating these necklaces! Flowers, pieces of broken or memorable vintage jewelry, gems, and beads can all be incorporated into the design.

When I saw Brenda Walton's gorgeous Floral and Leaf dies, I knew I wanted to make an outrageous but beautiful floral statement necklace with them. I have a few big spring events coming up that I plan on wearing this necklace to. What events are you attending this spring where you want to make a splash? This floral DIY bib necklace might be just the ticket.

The bib necklace is built on a fabric base made from wool felt leaves die cut with the Sizzix Bigz L Die - Leaves by Brenda Walton. I chose wool felt for this project because it is felted denser than acrylic felt, is less thick, and has a softer quality. If you are sensitive to wool, consider creating the bib portion of the necklace from acrylic felt or another fabric.

To decorate the necklace, I diecut an assortment of flowers and leaves using the Sizzix Bigz L Die - Leaves by Brenda Walton,  Sizzix Bigz Die w/Bonus Textured Impressions - Millinery Leaves Item #660697 by Brenda Walton, and Sizzix Bigz Die - Camellia Item #659242 by Brenda Walton with the Sizzix Big Shot Machine.

I assembled the flowers, adding stamen in some cases, and then added them to the bib. I also added pieces of jewelry I found in the bottom of my grandmother's old jewelry case, items I've picked up on shopping trips to DTLA, and beads from my stash.

The flowers give an unexpected weight and texture to the necklace while still being feminine and light. So an even softer look, die cut the flowers from silk organza or tulle. Experiment with texture and softness by layering flowers die cut from various materials.

I love how the Sizzix diecutting system allows us to create a custom jewelry piece, home decor, paper crafts and more in any color and from many different materials. No one I see at my spring events will have the same jewelry!
