Sizzix Tutorial | Family Tree Necklace by Tara Mihalech

Hello new friends! I'm so excited to be joining the Sizzix Design team. My name is Tara, and I blog at Suburble - a blog about everything and anything having to do with creative life in the 'burbs. Today I am going to share with you this simple - but lovely - family tree necklace. This is perfect for the gal in your life who cherishes her family - or for the matriarch who would love a memento of her brood.

The Sizzix Vintaj DecoEmboss dies just might be my favourite. Using a square Copper Blank, I chose an area on the Vintaj Mod Trees embossing die that I would like to be imprinted on my blank.

I closed the embossing die, placed it right side down in the Sizzix Sandwich (between a pair of Standard Cutting Pads), and then ran it through my Sizzix BIGkick machine on top of the Solo Platform that comes with it.

Isn't it amazing? The DecoEmboss die imprints on both sides of the blank, leaving a raised surface on one side, and a recessed image on the other.

You can paint the copper using alcohol inks, but for this piece, I wanted the natural copper to stand out. I grabbed my Vintaj Metal Reliefing Block and started gussying up this little square.

Or rather, I didn't, but my little helper did. Lila, my daughter, will no doubt make many an appearance in my posts here. She is obsessed with my Sizzix BIGkick machine, and often helps me with jewelry making.

Check out the difference! The reliefing block brings the image to life.

I wanted to pair the "Family Tree" pendant with two small charms that had my daughters' initials on it. I grabbed my Sizzix Vintaj DecoEmboss Lowercase Typewriter die and two small round copper blanks. The sandwich to emboss these guys are the same as for the Mod Tree mentioned above.

Once sanded with the reliefing block, they were perfect!

I used a jump ring to connect the three pendants, and then strung it on a ball chain. I love that my girls' initials are hanging near the top of the tree branches.

I may add my and my hubby's initials to it, as well. And that's the beauty of this necklace as a gift - perhaps for a new mama? - you can always add to it!
