Sizzix Tutorial | Roller Skates Card by Laura Russell

Hi there!  It's Laura here with a fun roller skates card tutorial!

I'm not sure if it's because I was an 80's child and practically lived in my white roller skates, or because my daughter is currently performing in the play Xanadu at school (where many cast members are rollin around in their skates), but I've got roller skates on the mind!

I love Brenda Walton's Ice Skate Bigz Die, but since I am a Southern California girl, I rarely get the chance to ice skate.  The other day I took a second look at this die and realized it would be really easy to turn the ice skates into roller skates!  By cutting off the blade and adding wheels and a brake, I had an adorable roller skate card that anyone, especially a fellow 80's child, would love!

Since the ice skate die is a Bigz die, the Sizzix sandwich was simple: a cutting pad, the die face up, some white card stock, then the other cutting pad.  Before making the sandwich, I folded the white card stock like a card, and then placed the folded edge along the left hand side of the roller skate, just inside the steel rule blade of the skate, so that it would stay a card and not cut the fold.  I rolled it all through my Big Shot, and ended up with a cute ice skate card.

But since I wanted a cute roller skate card instead, I first cut off the blade along the bottom.  Then I ran the die through again, this time with a small black piece of card stock that covered the bottom of the skate.  Then I cut the black piece to fit the bottom of the skate, so that it looked like the sole.

Next, I die cut four pink wheels using one of the Circle Framelits dies.  This was another easy sandwich using the magnetic platform.  I stacked the Magnetic Platform, a cutting pad, the pink card stock, a circle Framelits die, and then the other cutting pad.

After cutting four wheels I cut a pink brake for the front of the skates with my scissors.  I glued the wheels and the brake onto the card: two wheels glued to the front, and two wheels and the brake glued to the back.

After that came the laces, made from purple and white Baker's twine.  I adhered the end of the lace to the inside of the card at the bottom, and then laced it up to the top, made a knot, and then made a bow out of another small piece of twine.

I wanted a small embellishment on the skates, so I die cut a couple small hearts with the new Tags Triplits die set using pink and purple card stock, then adhered them to my roller skate card.

All done!  Isn't it cute?!  I suddenly have the urge to go to the roller rink and blast some Madonna music.

I encourage you to start looking at your favorite dies in a new way, and see if there's anything you can do to switch it up to make something different!

Now I just have to decide who to give this cute card to… my daughter in the 80's play, or my sister, who is taking private roller skate lessons so she can learn to skate backwards?  Yep, she was a child of the 80's too! ;)

Happy crafting!

Laura
