Hi! It's Karin from Leigh Laurel here today with a Sizzix Tutorial on how to make a 52 x 64" tumbler throw quilt, a fun pattern for this Witch Hazel fabric by October Afternoon provided for this tutorial by Riley Blake Designs.
I used the Sizzix Bigz Die Tumbler 8" H Finished with my Big Shot Pro and Standard Cutting Pads, which made this quilt top go together quickly. You will need ½ yard each of 12 different fabrics for the top, 4 yards of backing fabric and ½ yard of fabric for the binding.
Make your Sizzix sandwich (cutting pad, die with blades facing up, fabric and top cutting pad, all on top of the sliding tray as shown). Die cut five tumbler shapes out of two of the 12 fabrics, six tumbler shapes out of three prints, seven tumbler shapes out of six prints and seven tumbler shapes out of the final print. Note: additional yardage might be required if the you'd prefer all the prints to be right side up. I mixed it up a bit to maximize the fabric, and also used scraps for the half tumbler pieces at the sides where possible (included in the tumbler count, above).
Following the illustration above, lay the quilt top out and sew each row of tumblers together using ¼" seam allowances. Tumblers are fun and easy; they require a tiny bit of offset when sewing them together, but they're less tricky than triangles!
Once all the rows are assembled, sew row one to row two, row three to row four and so forth until there are four pairs of rows. Then sew the pairs of rows together. Trim the sides so that they're even and the quilt top is done!
I used scraps in strips on the back in between off-white tone on tone fabric from Riley Blake Designs.
Melissa from Sew Shabby Quilting quilted these fabulous spiderwebs with dark grey thread. I love it.
I chose to bind it with an unexpected pop of green from the Witch Hazel line. 244" of 2 ¼" binding does the trick. I finish the binding by hand.
This quilt goes together fast; there's definitely time to whip one up before October 31st. I've never made a Halloween quilt before so it's going to be a welcome addition to our spooky decor.
Thanks for visiting, and happy October!
